The day after boxing day, within 2 hours, my tortoiseshell cat unexpectedly died. She had somewhere else to be, some important cat-business that she had to attend on another plane.
I thought my little friend would be here for longer- she was only 8. She was empathic, loving and intelligent- a kind little heart but with fierce protection for her family. Molly viewed unknown visitors with suspicion. If she didn’t like their attitude towards any of us, or thought they’d upset us- then she watched them very closely, like a tiny bodyguard for her people- if someone came in the house she didn’t like, she’d put herself between us and them- even the other pets she’d protect like this- we were her family. If you cried, she was there to comfort you, her soft little head and paws demanding you love her.
She used to like to go for a walk with the dogs everyday, had other dog-friends she’d visit, and even accompanied us when we visited the school our youngest son moved to, when we moved house- and sometimes would trot over the road to pick him up from after-school club with me. A daredevil- she once tried to car-surf on my car while I was parking up! And loved to sit on top of our bungalow roof. Convinced I’d let her in our kitchen window even though she couldn’t fit, and used to dip her killer-mousey paws in my cup of tea if she got the chance. She was liquid- could fit through the door of a 12th scale model house! She was a sales-cat, have lots of photos of her demonstrating how comfortable the seat was on the FourX DL all-terrain powerchair- a cat-approved cushion!
Our constant little friend- ready to protect us, like a little guard-cat. For the past six years, she has adapted to new four-legged family members, and also new 2-legged ones visiting, as our grown-up children introduced her to their own babies. Our dogs feel her loss at home. Our lone cat looks for her.
Molly- my little friend- I thought you’d be here with us for longer, didn’t think you’d need to follow Onyx so soon. I will miss you.
