There is a huge range of funding options that are available, these range from government departments or healthcare organisations to charities, finance companies or crowd source funding. Some of the charities and organisations that may be able to help with funding is listed in our funding directory, this is not a complete list but it should help you start your search.
Whilst we can’t help you with any applications for funding, we are happy to answer any questions that you may have, so please don’t hesitate to contact us.

NHS

Whilst each NHS Trust has its own procedure when it comes to applying for a wheelchair through the NHS scheme, the basic information can be found below along with a link to NHS UK website.

Ask a GP, physiotherapist or hospital staff to refer you to your local wheelchair service for an assessment. You’ll need to do this before you can get an NHS wheelchair.

The local wheelchair service will decide if you need a wheelchair and, if so, what type.

The Children’s Trust

The Children’s Trust Brain Injury Community Team supports thousands of children a year in their local communities, helping children and their families gain access to the funding and support they need. In particular the Brain Injury Community Service provides specialist goal-orientated neurorehabilitation delivered in the child/young person’s environment. The Mobility Trust

The Mobility Trust provides funding towards powered wheelchairs and scooters for severely disabled children and adults. Grants are only available for equipment that is not available from statutory sources and when the disabled person is unable to purchase for themselves.

The Elifar Foundation funds a wide range of specialised equipment, therapies and respite for children and adults with profound disabilities, physical disabilities or learning disabilities. The SF Fund

The SF Fund provides financial support for disabled individuals of all ages for both equipment and services that make a significant difference to their lives. They are able to fund items such as trikes, powered wheelchairs, AAC communicators, computers, adjustable beds and mobility scooters. Applications may be submitted either by the individual (with a supporting letter from a professional) or from an organisation on their behalf. Aspire supports people with spinal Cord injuries in the UK. Through it’s Human Needs Fund it is able to offer funding for specialist equipment not available from statutory services such as lightweight wheelchairs, powered chairs, electronic page turners and assistive technology equipment. Lifeline 4 kids provides essential equipment to help improve the quality of life for children (0-18 years) with disabilities and special needs. They are also one of the only UK charities prepared to help a special needs child from a low-income family with essential smaller items such as shoes, clothing, bedding and specialist toys.

The Joseph Patrick Trust (JPT) is the welfare trust of the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign. The Mobility Trust

The Mobility Trust provides funding towards powered wheelchairs and scooters for severely disabled children and adults. Grants are only available for equipment that is not available from statutory sources and when the disabled person is unable to purchase for themselves.

The SF Fund

The SF Fund provides financial support for disabled individuals of all ages for both equipment and services that make a significant difference to their lives. They are able to fund items such as trikes, powered wheelchairs, AAC communicators, computers, adjustable beds and mobility scooters. Applications may be submitted either by the individual (with a supporting letter from a professional) or from an organisation on their behalf. Aspire Spinal Injury Charity

Aspire supports people with spinal Cord injuries in the UK. Through it’s Human Needs Fund it is able to offer funding for specialist equipment not available from statutory services such as lightweight wheelchairs, powered chairs, electronic page turners and assistive technology equipment. The Joseph Patrick Trust

The Joseph Patrick Trust (JPT) is the welfare trust of the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign. The trust provides financial support towards specialist equipment to help promote mobility and independence for people with muscular dystrophy, or a related muscle disease. The grants cover pieces of equipment that the health and social services do not provide, but which are still vital for maintaining independence and quality of life.
